Hey guys, It's Josh Angeles. Ah, to be back once again!

In the midst of finally settling over a new place, I have a whole bunch of old works I'd like to share. Most of which are unfinished projects that I've collected over the past year. I finally once again have a scanner, also, now a printer, so this will bring new depths to my arsenal!

Below is an unfinished project that I was attempting to do, inspired by the book "The Skillsfull Huntsman, I wanted to take a movie and redesign the look of the story. In this case, I wanted to make a samurai version of Sam Raimi's "The Quick and the Dead", considering that most western movies were adaptation of Samurai movies :)

Sadly this project was put on hiatus for the longest time. Looking back at these now, I'd like to see to continue this project with the proficiency that I have these days :)

Self Portrait

Well, when I went to do another self portrait this morning, I looked at my Wednesday post with horror. I almost wanted to delete it, but then realized that there is only going forward and it motivated me to do a series of these. I also learned that one of the challenges to doing a self portrait is being a good model, my head continues to shift toward the screen I am painting on, and tilt up, elongating and narrowing the proportions. Now I know what Masha goes through when I try to get her to sit still for a sketch, it goes against every impulse to fidget around. hopefully I can do enough of these to get a consistent likeness. And find some other models....

Getting some progress with Joan, however there are still some anatomically incorrect places. The face took me forever to figure out but it seems fine for now, however Im still not satisfied with it, I think the nose is off, and the eyes are weird but I tried literally like 80 times painting the face over and over again. So I'm breaking off that for now. Also still trying to figure out her arms, they are a bit wonky and too long.

Finally got a chance to scan in some thumbs for the Fire Elf piece. Definitely have a lot of ideas on how to fix that a whole lot better. Instead of trying to salvage the previous one I was working on, I'm going to be starting over from scratch and implementing some illustrative story telling with it. I can do that better by selecting better angles and really thinking about what is going on in the scene.

Quick little post before heading out to bed. Probably around 10 hours into this piece already. I wanted to fit more illustrations towards something what Wizards of the Coast would publish. I think the canvas size is relatively the same as Magic the Gathering cards, or at least close to it. Things I'm going to work on next is some kind of drapery to fill in some of the empty spaces and add a bit more into the character. Also a hint of a background environment is important.

I really love the process of painting a concept design. More often than not, it's really about the journey. I'm just going to pour some thoughts out on this, about the things that I theorized and the process I took to accomplish this piece. And as always, I'm open to constructive criticism - why things work and why things don't work.

As artists, I think we see the world in terms of shapes and values. The values make up the shapes. It's about how light plays with shadows. Something that I learned from my figure drawing classes is that once you stop labeling the eye, you start to see it as an abstract shape. Basically, you start to draw what you see and not what you know. Hence, we see things in shapes and values.

Another thing about shapes is you have to find ways of breaking it up. When you find yourself having one big empty space on your design, it leaves it off balanced and empty. I did this all throughout my design, from the legs of the chair, to the plates on the chair, to the Ambassador's clothes, and such. Of course, don't over do it, do it to where it works. Otherwise, there's just a blob of color that's suppose to be the leggings of a chair, and that's boring. I guess that's part of detailing.

I started this piece in black and white. But I've noticed that a lot of great artists, don't just use real grayscale. It's either a cool gray or a warm gray. After working on it in grayscale, I used the photo filter option (image/adjustments/photo filter) and overlayed a warm tone on it and from there I started refining it again, color picking the values around the piece. Once I felt like I had somewhat of a defined design, that's when you can overlay color. Color doesn't work if values do not work!!!!!

When picking out colors, I usually try to limit myself to a couple, maybe 3 max to start out with. I'll add another color if I really need to, something to draw attention to. But that's about it, and most of the time, I'm using the eye dropper tool to select colors. I would use the color wheel very seldom.

Repetitive design is also a good thing as it makes a piece a whole. I.e. the legs, and the logo branded on to the plates. This helps a lot with environment work as well. If you've noticed, a lot of people would repeat a similar shape of something as it goes back towards the horizon.

A few more other things: The transform/warp/distort tools are your friends as well as layer masks. Flipping your work as you move along is essential. Limit your brushes, too. I usually only use the round brush with different presets to it. Custom brushes are great for texturing, but most of the time I'm only using a few varieties of the round brush. I try to limit myself when it comes to zooming into a piece. I paint with the canvas zoomed out about 33% or whatever fits to screen. And use big brushes.

I think that pretty much sums up what I think about when I'm painting. I know a lot of these are things we all already know, but it's nice to put things to words.

This was an outstanding event put on by Bad Unkl Sista. They are a Butoh troupe who among other performances, gave us an inspiring drawing/ painting/ photo workshop set to ultra hip music spun by our hosts husband, a talented DJ.

The mood was playful, and yet there was a seriousness involved because all of us were working in a medium, dance, visual arts, music... etc.. that we all care so deeply about. And we were sharing these talents with each other.
