Pretty good study. I feel that the lips are a tad off. They don't seem to be following the form of the face. Or in a sense they feel flat. Would like to see the photo-ref of this piece for better critiques.
As for the pirate -
I find that whenever you paint people with swords, they always seem to be in the same post. The post is almost exactly like the "She Samurai" piece you did. I would suggest to push for a completely different pose to get you out of your comfort zone. The swords are almost always parallel to the horizon line which bothers me. A little angle would be sweet.
