Hey guys, It's Josh Angeles. Angelo invited me to nocturnal concept and it's a privilege to post some artwork with the people that I know and helped me. :) Anyways here's one unfinished work that is taking me a long time (Mainly this piece is for practice and I'm trying to learn from it). There's no story behind it, just decided to draw a female warrior.

Taking a cue from one of my favorite artists, Daryl Mandryk, I made some 10 minute speed paintings, pausing one of my favorite movies, Avatar. This is a great way to study composition, lighting and color keys, and gesture while not lingering on any details too long.

Quick and the Dead

Ah, to be back once again!

In the midst of finally settling over a new place, I have a whole bunch of old works I'd like to share. Most of which are unfinished projects that I've collected over the past year. I finally once again have a scanner, also, now a printer, so this will bring new depths to my arsenal!

Below is an unfinished project that I was attempting to do, inspired by the book "The Skillsfull Huntsman, I wanted to take a movie and redesign the look of the story. In this case, I wanted to make a samurai version of Sam Raimi's "The Quick and the Dead", considering that most western movies were adaptation of Samurai movies :)

Sadly this project was put on hiatus for the longest time. Looking back at these now, I'd like to see to continue this project with the proficiency that I have these days :)

Archery

35 min sketch from imagination. Trying to capture figure in a scene rather than in a void on a blank background, it helps me know how to light it anyways. Hope to take this to color soon.

From Art-tard to Freaking Awesome!!!

This kid. Is ridiculous.

16 year old Miles Johnston. My buddy sent me his sketchbook link which shows his first post when he was around 14 back in 2007. Almost three years later, this kid has been featured in ImagineFx and is already on his way to the top.

Havent been blown away by good artists in a while...

Self Portrait

Well, when I went to do another self portrait this morning, I looked at my Wednesday post with horror. I almost wanted to delete it, but then realized that there is only going forward and it motivated me to do a series of these. I also learned that one of the challenges to doing a self portrait is being a good model, my head continues to shift toward the screen I am painting on, and tilt up, elongating and narrowing the proportions. Now I know what Masha goes through when I try to get her to sit still for a sketch, it goes against every impulse to fidget around. hopefully I can do enough of these to get a consistent likeness. And find some other models....

Figure Drawings Value Tutorial

Here is small explanation on how to use values in a figure painting I quickly did one night for my mentees.

Update!

Self Portrait

35 Min Sketch.
Looks a little crooked, probably because my head was moving around in my tiny 4 inch mirror.

Joan d'Arc

Here is my final version of this gal. I ended up cropping the canvas for compositional purposes. I thought all the other elements in the previous versions weren't really helping that much + I spent lots and lots of hours just on her upper half.

Digital Painting Tutorial

I made this tutorial for my mentee at conceptart.org. Hopefully it can bring some insights to others at the same time.
